India are currently playing against South Africa in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, July 05. India won the toss and opted to bowl first.
South Africa got off to a flying start with Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits adding 50 runs in 7.1 overs. Wolvaardt didn’t take much time to set her eyes in as she hit a boundary in the third ball only. Soon she smashed a maximum over deep mid-wicket and also hit back-to-back boundaries off Thakur.
Her onslaught was about to stop as Pooja Vastrakar created a chance. However, Shreyanka Patil dropped a sitter and India paid the price too. She took charge in the powerplay with more big hits and South Africa reached 44 runs after the powerplay. However, soon after they reached 50, Radha Yadav dismissed the dangerous Laura Wolvaardt.
Flighted delivery from Radha and Wolvaardt tried to shuffle across, with a sweep behind square on the leg-side but the ball drifted in with the angle and hit the leg-stump. She went for 33 (22) [4s-3 6s-2]. Marizanne Kapp, meanwhile, took no time to settle and hit consecutive boundaries in the same over.
Both Tazmin Brits and Kapp started hitting all over the park. With their big hits, South Africa reached 78 at the halfway mark. Soon after they stepped up the ante and their big hits and quick runs between the wickets helped them reach their respective fifties as well.
While Brits hit a boundary and reached the feat in 40 balls, Kapp also reached the feat with a four in 30 balls as well. However, Radha Yadav soon came in the attack and removed Kapp for 57 off 33 with 8 fours and a six. But they failed to stop Tazmin Brits as she hit back-to-back sixes as well.
Chloe Tryon, who came from a long injury lay-off also joined Brits in the party. Although her stay was small in the middle, Pooja Vastrakar did exceptionally well to remove both the set batters, restricting the visitors to 189 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs. Tazmin Brits top-scored with 81 (56) with 10 boundaries and 3 sixes as well. However, this is the highest total for South Africa against India as well.
