Match 11: Nepal vs Hong Kong– Hong Kong Won By 7 Wickets
Nepal and Hong Kong faced off in a rain-marred closely contested encounter in the 11th match of Group C at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier held at the Asian Institute of Technology Ground in Bangkok.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, Hong Kong Women made an immediate impact with a disciplined bowling performance led by Alison Siu, who was instrumental in restricting Nepal to a modest total of 29/3 in the allotted 5 overs.
Siu was exceptional with the ball, claiming three crucial wickets for just 11 runs in her two overs, earning her the Player of the Match award.
Nepal’s innings got off to a shaky start with the early dismissal of Kabita Kunwar, who was bowled by Wai Siu for just 2 runs in the second ball of the first over. Samjhana Khadka provided some resistance, scoring a brisk 10 off 7 deliveries before being caught by Mariko Hill off Wai Siu in the second over.
Wai Siu continued her impactful spell by dismissing Puja Mahato, who managed just 3 runs, further denting Nepal’s hopes of setting a competitive target. Despite the efforts of captain Indu Barma, who remained unbeaten on 9 off 10 deliveries, and Rubina Chhetry, who added 4 runs, Nepal struggled to gain any momentum against the disciplined Hong Kong attack, concluding their innings at 29/3.
Chasing a target of 30 runs in 5 overs, Hong Kong’s innings got off to a dramatic start with the run-out of captain Kary Chan for a duck off the very first ball. Nepal seized the opportunity to exert pressure as Kabita Kunwar struck twice in her spell, dismissing Natasha Miles and Mariko Hill to keep the contest alive.
However, Shanzeen Shahzad held her nerve, anchoring the chase with a composed 15 off 12 balls, including a crucial six that released some of the pressure. Despite the late fall of Hill, who was bowled by Kunwar for 11, Yasmin Daswani’s quick 3 not out off 2 balls ensured Hong Kong Women crossed the finish line with three balls to spare, reaching 30/3 in 4.3 overs.
Kabita Kunwar was the standout bowler for Nepal, taking 2 wickets for just 5 runs in her 1.3 overs, but her efforts were not enough to prevent Hong Kong from securing a 7-wicket victory. Puja Mahato proved to be expensive, conceding 19 runs in her two overs, while Riya Sharma gave away 6 runs in her solitary over.
The win not only handed Hong Kong two valuable points in Group C but also underscored their bowling prowess, with Alison Siu’s spell emerging as the game-changing performance in a low-scoring encounter.
