While Australia powered past Nepal with a commanding 83-run win, Ireland held their nerve in a tightly contested game to edge past Pakistan by 13 runs. Meanwhile, South Africa’s disciplined performance saw them secure a comprehensive 41-run victory over Nigeria using the DLS method, rounding off an exciting day of cricket.

Match 20: Australia U19 vs Nepal U19- Australia U19 Won By 83 Runs

Australia Under-19s registered an 83-run victory over Nepal Under-19s in their Group D encounter at the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in Bangi. Opting to bat first, Australia recovered from an early wobble to post a competitive total of 139 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to a standout performance from Player of the Match Caoimhe Bray.

Australia’s innings began shakily as Nepal’s Puja Mahato struck thrice in the powerplay. Mahato’s disciplined bowling removed openers Kate Pelle and Ines Mckeon before also dismissing skipper Lucy Hamilton for a duck, leaving Australia reeling at 14 for 3 in the third over.

Bray then played a counter-attacking knock, stabilizing the innings alongside Eleanor Larosa. The duo added a crucial 72-run partnership, with Bray smashing 45 off 34 balls, including three boundaries and three sixes, while Larosa contributed a steady 31 off 39 balls.

Once Bray fell on the last ball of the 13th over, Hasrat Gill took charge, unleashing an array of strokes to score an unbeaten 30 off 21 deliveries. Chloe Ainsworth added a brisk 16 not out from 9 balls to ensure Australia finished on a high. For Nepal, Mahato was the standout bowler with figures of 3 for 31, while Seemana KC chipped in with two crucial wickets despite conceding 35 runs.

Chasing 140, Nepal’s batters found the going tough against a disciplined Australian bowling attack. Juliette Morton and Lily Bassingthwaighte made early inroads, reducing Nepal to 11 for 1 and then 28 for 3 by midway. Skipper Puja Mahato tried to anchor the innings with a laborious 18 off 42 balls, but wickets fell regularly.

Australia’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure, with Hasrat Gill delivering a stellar spell of 2 for 9 in her four overs. Morton and Bassingthwaighte also picked up two wickets each, conceding just 10 and 4 runs, respectively, while Ainsworth and Bray kept Nepal’s scoring rate in check. Nepal could only manage 56 for 8 in their 20 overs, with their innings marked by a lack of boundaries and strike rotation.

This victory solidified Australia’s position as a dominant force in Group D, with Caoimhe Bray’s all-round contributions shining brightest on the day.

Match 21: Ireland U19 vs Pakistan U19- Ireland Won By 13 Runs

In a closely contested Group B match at the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup held at the Johor Cricket Academy Oval, Ireland Under-19s clinched a hard-fought 13-run victory (DLS method) over Pakistan Under-19s in a rain-shortened encounter.

After winning the toss, Ireland opted to bat first in a match restricted to nine overs per side. Their innings was anchored by Player of the Match Alice Walsh, who showcased her prowess with an aggressive 31 off 19 balls, including five boundaries.

Her innings set the tempo for Ireland and was complemented by contributions from Freya Sargent (11 off 10) and Annabel Squires, who remained unbeaten on 13. Pakistan’s bowlers displayed grit, with Quratulain Ahsen (1/8) and Memoona Khalid (2/6) keeping the Irish total in check. Ireland finished at 69/5, maintaining a healthy run rate of 7.66.

In reply, Pakistan’s chase faltered under pressure as the Irish bowlers and fielders held their nerve. The opening partnership of Komal Khan (12 off 12) and Fatima Khan (10 off 7) provided a brisk start, but a series of run-outs disrupted their momentum. Ireland’s bowlers, led by Ellie McGee (2/13) and Freya Sargent (1/7), kept the batters in check with disciplined lines. Despite a valiant effort from Tayyba Imdad (9 off 8), Pakistan fell short, managing 59/7 in their nine overs, scoring at 6.55 runs per over.

Ireland’s fielding was a significant factor, with three crucial run-outs, including the dismissals of key players Komal Khan and Fatima Khan. The Irish bowlers, supported by sharp work in the field, ensured that Pakistan could not build partnerships or accelerate when required.

Alice Walsh’s impactful innings underlined her importance to the Irish side, earning her the Player of the Match award. This victory further bolstered Ireland’s campaign in the tournament, while Pakistan will rue missed opportunities in a match that could have gone either way.

Match 22: South Africa U19 vs Nigeria U19- South Africa Won By 41 Runs

In a rain-affected encounter at the Borneo Cricket Ground in Kuching, South Africa Under-19s delivered a commanding performance to secure a 41-run victory over Nigeria Under-19s using the DLS method in the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup.

Both teams faced the challenge of a truncated match, with the game reduced to 8 overs per side due to persistent rain, but South Africa adapted brilliantly to the conditions.

Winning the toss and opting to field, Nigeria sought early breakthroughs to capitalize on the limited overs. However, South Africa’s opening batters, Jemma Botha and Simone Lourens, laid a solid foundation. Lourens led the charge with a fluent 25 off 29 balls, striking four boundaries to keep the scoring rate healthy despite tight spells from Nigeria’s bowlers.

Botha, meanwhile, played a steady supporting role with an unbeaten 10 off 15 deliveries. The pair added 41 runs for the first wicket, setting the tone for South Africa’s innings.

The Nigerian bowlers were disciplined for much of the innings but struggled to contain the South African batters towards the end. Piety was the standout performer, claiming two wickets in successive deliveries to remove Lourens and captain Kayla Reyneke, finishing with figures of 1-12 from her single over. Karabo Meso’s late cameo of 8 not out off just 3 balls, including two boundaries, propelled South Africa to 49/2 in their 8 overs.

Chasing a revised target of 66 under the DLS method, Nigeria faced a daunting task against a sharp South African bowling unit. Their innings started disastrously, losing Peculiar Agboya in the very first over without scoring. South Africa’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure, and Nigeria’s batters struggled to find any rhythm. Only captain Lucky Piety (6 off 12 balls) and Lillian Udeh (5 off 2) managed to score more than five runs, as wickets tumbled regularly.

Kayla Reyneke proved lethal, claiming 2 wickets for 13 runs in her 2 overs. However, Seshnie Naidu stole the show with a stunning all-round performance. Her 1-over spell yielded two crucial wickets for just one run, earning her the Player of the Match award. Nthabiseng Nini, with figures of 1-2 from her 2 overs, and Mieke van Voorst (1-3) also contributed significantly to the team’s dominant display.

The South African fielders were razor-sharp, with three batters dismissed via catches and two through run-outs, exemplifying their control over the proceedings. Nigeria ultimately limped to 24/8 in their 8 overs, falling well short of the target and showcasing the gulf in experience and quality between the two sides.
