ICC T20 World Cup 2023: Team Preview – West Indies

The ICC T20 World Cup 2023 is scheduled to begin on February 10 in South Africa. Cricket West Indies (CWI) has revealed their squad of 15, which includes the former captain and three players from the Under-19 World Cup squad.

Stafanie Taylor, the former captain, has been selected for the Windies team to compete in the ICC T20 World Cup this month. She will have every chance to demonstrate her fitness before the competition.

Players to watch out for in West Indies:

Prior to the ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa beginning on February 10, the seasoned all-rounder has been battling a back injury, but the team’s selectors are optimistic the 31-year-old will be able to compete in the tournament.

Taylor was one of the 15 players chosen to the roster. Hayley Matthews, another all-rounder, will head the Caribbean team alongside vice-captain Shemaine Campbelle.

Zaida James, Trishan Holder, and Djenaba Joseph, three members of the Under-19 team who recently competed in the inaugural U-19 T20 World Cup and later filled in for injured West Indies senior team members during their Tri-Series preparation, are now included in the 15-member World Cup squad. Lead selector Ann Browne-John is sure the trio will contribute significantly.

Stafanie Taylor, the former captain, and a seasoned all-rounder has also made the cut, although her participation is pending the results of her final fitness evaluation. According to reports, the 31-year-old was diagnosed with a back problem after being evaluated by a physician in Johannesburg. She then travelled to Cape Town for extra treatment and to start her return-to-play protocols before the Team’s arrival.

To repeat Stafanie Taylor’s heroics from the 2016 edition, which saw Windies win the trophy, Hayley Matthews must set aside the record of one win out of their last 13 T20I appearances. They had a busy pre-tournament schedule, but the results have been concerning for the team.

However, Windies is slated in Group 2, and they have games scheduled against England on February 11th, India on February 15th, Ireland on February 17th, and Pakistan on February 19th.

West Indies squad:

Hayley Matthews (c), Shemaine Campbelle (vc), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Afy Fletcher, Shabika Gajnabi, Chinelle Henry, Trishan Holder, Zaida James, Djenaba Joseph, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera Selman, Stafanie Taylor, Rashada Williams.

West Indies’ Itinerary:

11th February 2023: West Indies vs England
15th February 2023: West Indies vs India
17th February 2023: West Indies vs Ireland
19th February 2023: West Indies vs Pakistan
