Hopes of the hosts are still alive as they bounce back into the ICC T20 World Cup 2023 with a thundering win against New Zealand, bundling them out at just 66, thus registering a gigantic win by 65 runs. And none other than Chloe Tryon was the only contender for the Player of the Match for her outstanding performance both with the bat (40 off 34) and ball (2/12).
South Africa captain Sune Luus was on the ground for her team’s second match in the World Cup, energized to turn things on their side, ready for a toss where she won and chose to bat first. Eden Carson of New Zealand was glaring at the ball to run the first over.
The first ball of the match, with good length and Laura Wolvaardt, was off the mark with the single punched towards the long-on. Brits got her first run too but the haunt for the hosts is not yet gone which saw her missing the attempted sweep and losing her wicket on LBW. An early attack by the White Ferns.

Marizanne Kapp, the new at third down, kicked off the innings with a powerful boundary, one in the second over and another in the third but she too collapsed too early Lea Tahuhu dismissed her on a length ball at just 9 off 10 balls.
Keeping the powerplay in mind and in an attempt to shrug some pressure off, Luus opened up arms to smash to adorable boundaries in the fourth over and two more in the last over of the powerplay contemplated by Laura Wolvaardt’s smoked cut through the point region for a four in the fifth over.
Luus looked in somewhat stable touch, but the journey of the hosts seemed much curvy as she had to depart falling short to reach the crease and getting out for a run-out at 22 off 17. Chloe Tryon, the fresh down, was quick to sense Hayley Jensen’s full-length ball and screwed it for a four.
With a dip in the run rate, came the wicket of Wolvaardt (13 off 17) in the ninth over. But Tryon was poised to float her bat for a four in the very next over. Just as she was trying to strengthen the partnership with Delmi Tucker, the latter left for the dug-out at just 5 off 11 expensive balls.
Tryon was stable by this time on the crease and the ball looked bigger with every passing delivery as she smashed two boundaries in the fifteenth over. Nadine de Klerk too anticipated the power that Tryon was trying to bring the runs on every available opportunity and came up with one of the most adorable shots of the innings to score a boundary.
Tryon’s magnificent 40-run knock to put South Africa on a lighter note than the trembled start, came to an end as she tried to sky the pull shot but ended up handing it over into the keeper’s gloves. Owing to the last over of the innings Sinalo Jafta tried to put something defendable score on the board with a final four on the fourth ball of the over followed by two singles.

The White Ferns needed 137 runs to win, and the bowling attack was handed over to Nonkululeko Mlaba which went fantastically well for the hosts as she brought the early wicket of Bernadine Bezuidenhout that too on a duck on the second ball of the innings. This almost cleared that South Africa is not going to let the match lose away.
Georgia Plimmer’s boundary in the second over was just washed away with the wicket of Suzie Bates, another one back into the pavilion at a mere duck. And a copy-paste of moments ran the innings as Amelia Kerr’s boundary too was followed by Plimmer’s (7 off 12) wicket in the fourth over.

Kerr could hardly take the pressure fittingly into the ongoing attack from the Proteas and met her dismissal on the fifth ball of the fifth over at 10 off 12 balls. With the top and upper-middle order back into the dugout in the powerplay, two fresh bats of Maddy Green and Sophie Devine swayed slightly on the crease.
But even the attempt to get the frozen scoreboard going with singles couldn’t turn up more for New Zealand as Maddy was the next in the queue towards the pavilion as Tryon took the responsibility in the bowling department too, to get things done faster.
A much-awaited boundary came from the bat of Sophie Devine but that just went in vain as the fourteenth over saw two back-to-back wickets of Hayley Jensen (7 off 14) and Sophie Devine (16 off 26) followed by Lea Tahuhu’s LBW in the fifteenth over.
Although Jess Kerr tried a bit to pull the innings with a boundary and a couple of quick runs between the wickets she too collapsed on the first ball of the eighteenth over at 11 off 13 balls followed by the last wicket of the White Ferns as Fran Jonas walked back into the pavilion with Eden Carson at the summarized defeated total of just a mere 66.
