ICC T20 World Cup 2023: South Africa Beat Bangladesh, Reach Semi-final With Ease

The Proteas are now ready to take on England in the second semi-final in the ICC T20 World Cup 2023 as they beat Bangladesh in a one-sided match by 10 wickets and with 13 balls remaining in the account to spare. Laura Wolvaardt’s bold knock of unbeaten 66 won her the Player of the Match award.

South Africa came into the match with a loss against Australia on the back and was called on to bowl first as Bangladesh won the toss. Nonkululeko Mlaba started the attack sparing just three runs in the first over. Shamima Sultana was on the rocks with the first boundary of the innings.

Although it was thought of as a poised start, Murshida Khatun left not only early but on a mere duck. Sobhana Mostary was next in the line-up and took the opportunity of a poor delivery by Ayabonga Khaka in the fourth over to punish for a boundary. Sultana too had to depart in the last over of the powerplay at just 11 off 16.

With just a single in the seventh and four others in the following over brought the second four for Mostary in the ninth over. Nigar Sultana and Mostary pulled up a balanced partnership although not that promising enough. After much ado, Sultana came up with a splendid boundary. But that could only bring Mostary’s wicket as Mlaba got the breakthrough in the thirteenth over.

Sultana was trying hard to put some runs on the scoreboard with a crunched boundary in the fourteenth over followed by Shorna Akter’s contemplating four in the next over. But Akter’s help was short-lived as she had to walk back to the pavilion with just a run-a-ball of 11.

Marizanne Kapp was the next on the show with her excellence with the ball to bowl Sultana out on a tactically slower delivery at a well-fought 30-run knock off 34 balls. The overs at the tail of the innings could only bring Fargana Hoque’s wicket in the nineteenth over followed by a busy last over that comprised five singles and a four by Nahida Akter on the last ball to freeze the scoreboard at a low-key total of 113 for the loss of 6.

To start off with the chase, Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt were ready to face Marufa Akter, ready to stream in with the new ball. The first four overs were much like a practice session for South Africa as only 9 runs could have been able to climb on the board until Wolvaardt came up striking hard for the first maximum of the fixture in the fifth over.

And Wolvaardt finished the powerplay with a boundary more to keep the momentum of smashes going. Till the tenth over, the duo showed some real patience to get the scoreboard moving with continuous series of running between the wickets and a confident Brits pulled up the fifty for her team with a blistering boundary in the eleventh over.

Post the fifty-run partnership, the duo tried to speed up the chase with Wolvaardt hitting a boundary in the twelfth over and a couple of fours by Brits in the fourteenth. And the former was on the historical high as she punished two consecutive balls for four to badge herself with the fifth fifty of her career.

Tazmin Brits was next on the achievements list as she stood up on her sixth T20I fifty on the first ball of the eighteenth over which Wolvaardt further traced to secure her team’s place in the semi-finals against England with two back-to-back thrilling boundaries on the fourth ad fifth ball of the same over.
