ICC T20 World Cup 2023: Rain Disturbs Play; India Secure A Win Through DLS

As Ireland and India faced each other for their final group stage game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2023, the two teams weren’t able to play a complete game due to rain. It literally rained on their parade, as Ireland went in for a chase.

An important game for India in order to make it to the qualifiers. Ireland had no hope but did play a tough game in order to end the group stage on a better note. Huge contribution from Smriti Mandhana who helped India secure an easy win.

The game at St. George’s Oval started off with India winning the toss and opting to bat first. Shafali Verma and Mandhana started off with the bat. A genuine start for India, as Mandhana and Verma batted pretty well. They laid the foundation for the game and scored some quick runs.

Verma lost an unfortunate wicket to Laura Delany’s delivery as Amy Hunter caught her. Verma went back securing 24 runs but the game was well-managed and carried forward by Mandhana.

Harmanpreet Kaur played her crucial game as she secured a total of 3000 runs, becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to have achieved this laurel. Second to Rohit Sharma Harmanpreet has indeed made women players from over the world proud.

Smriti played a major game today. Her 87 runs off 56 deliveries were crucial for the team. Brilliant execution and lively shots made her the talk of the town. While the Indian team played a quick inning, they lost some steady wickets.

Laura Delany proved to be undefeatable with the ball in hand. She secured 3 wickets and was backed up by Orla Prendergast’s 2 and Arlene Kelly’s 1 wicket. A successful inning for India who put up a total of 155 runs on board for Ireland to chase in 20 overs.

The second inning for Ireland to chase began with Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis opening. Amy Hunter lost an early wicket and so did Orla Prendergast, who went back securing nothing. While Prendergast was bowled by Renuka Singh, Hunter lost her wicket with Jemimah Rodrigues’ brilliant fielding skills.

The rain stopped play with Prendergast’s wicket. After much reconciliation, the game was brought down to 60 runs for Ireland to chase. DLS method was applied and Ireland went back in.

Gaby Lewis and Laura Delany played a fair game. The two tried their level best to chase the required score in 8.2 overs. Gaby Lewis scored 32 but the team eventually failed to secure the required runs.

Ireland wrapped up at 54 and lost the game by a close margin of 5 runs. Smriti was named the Player of the Game.
