England crushed Pakistan in the final Group stage game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2023 between the two teams. As the teams fought for a steady succession to the qualifiers, Pakistan had no hopes of escalating further.
England ended the last group stage game with a fabulous win, winning all their games so far. Pakistan on the other hand has had a disappointing series so far and have secured only one win.
At Newlands Cricket Ground, England witnessed one solid win, securing their game by a huge margin on end on the top of the group table. Winning the toss England decided to bat. Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley opened bat for England. Dunkley lost an early wicket on Fatima Sana’s delivery as she was caught by Nashra Sandhu. But the game was carried forward by Dunkley.
Dunkley held her ground and batted for a sturdy inning. She secured 59 runs in merely 33 deliveries. Natalie Sciver backed Dunkley’s game as she too secured a huge score. Sciver smashed the deliveries she faced and put together a total of 81 runs playing at a strike rate of 200+.
With Dunkley and Sciver’s major contribution, the team was carried to a safe total. Yet Amy Jones came in to bat and smashed some impressive runs. Jones’ 47 runs contribution, finally brought the game to a decent end for England.
A heap of runs were set by the English team for Pakistan to chase in the second inning. However, a lack of strategic execution from the Pakistani bowlers and failure to secure the required wickets on time led the team to destruction.
Fatima Sana secured 2 wickets and was backed by Sadia Iqbal, Tuba Hassan and Nida Dar’s single wickets each. Pakistan failed to impress with the ball in hand and this led to a destructive inning that followed.
With a target of 214 runs to chase in 20 overs, the Pakistani team was under a crucial test indeed. Under the pressure of chase, the Pakistani team lost wickets way too frequently than expected.
Sadaf Shams, Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail lost their early wickets. Sidra Ameen did try, but no major success for the batter. In the final few overs, Tuba Hassan was the only player to secure a few major runs for the team, but the team fell short of overs.
A dull chase by Pakistan, losing some quick wickets. The English bowlers impressed with their fabulous spells. Each bowler contributed something to the team that led to a convincing win.
While Charlie Dean and Katherine Sciver Brunt secured 2 major wickets each, Natalie Sciver, Sarah Glenn and Sophie Ecclestone secured one each, which led to the Pakistani team losing a total of 9 wickets by the end of the game.
Pakistan failed terribly in the attempt. They were able to secure merely 99 runs in 20 overs and lost the game by a huge margin of 114 runs.
England has now escalated to the Quarterfinals.
