After having secured their first game over West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup 2023, England has successfully continued their win streak. Sophie Ecclestone’s master-class bowling followed by Alice Capsey’s major run contribution led England to a comfortable win over Ireland.
The 6th game of the Women’s T20 World Cup, held at Boland Park was brilliantly won by England. England played a strategic game against Ireland, first with the ball and then the bat.
Much was expected from Ireland who were off for their maiden tussle of the tournament. Batters Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis were off to a deserving start. They played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the team and contributed some major runs. Gaby Lewis happened to become the highest run scorer for the team as she secured 36 runs off 37 deliveries.
After she was caught by Danni Wyatt on Ecclestone’s delivery, the middle and the lower order collapsed significantly. They weren’t able to continue the trail of runs set by the openers, making it difficult to add on the required runs.
Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn and Charlie Dean’s strong bowling performance against England led to ultimate destruction. The two picked major wickets like that of Hunter’s, Lewis’, Orla Prendergast’s, Laura Delany’s, Eimear Richardson and Louise Little’s. With this, the Irish team was able to put up a total of just 105 runs at the end of 18.2 wickets; losing all their wickets.
With a wounding bowling performance, the English team went in for a chase. They lost Sophia Dunkley in the very first over on Orla Prendergast’s delivery. A sad start for England, but Alice Capsey shouldered the game responsibly and helped England chase.
Capsey played a fierce game. Her 51 runs off 22 deliveries, in a situation where the team lost a few loose wickets, proved to be a crucial one. Players like Natalie Sciver and Dunkley lost wickets on the other end but Capsey held ground. She played responsibly for the team helping them secure a comfortable win in ICC T20 World Cup 2023.
With Capsey’s steady contribution, England was able to secure the game in 14.2 overs. They won an easy game but with Ireland’s strong defence, the team lost 6 wickets in all. Cara Murray bowled a brilliant spell against England. She picked a total of 3 wickets, bowling at an economy of 5.
Ireland seemed to have fallen short of a few runs. Great contribution from both teams. England has successfully secured 2 games at the stage level. Ireland must come back stronger.
