In a bold stance, Indian cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur maintains her unwavering stance despite a two-match ban handed to her following a contentious third ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka.
Expressing her perspective, Kaur firmly stated, “I will not say that I regret anything because at the end of the day as a player you want to see that fair things are happening.”
Kaur’s actions during the fractious Dhaka ODI led to her ban, a penalty she accepts without remorse. Speaking to The Cricket Paper, she articulated her stance, highlighting her right to express herself and her feelings as a player. She asserted, “I don’t think I said anything wrong to any player or any person. I just said what happened on the field. I don’t regret anything.”
The incident in question unfolded during the Dhaka ODI, where Kaur exhibited her dissatisfaction with the umpiring decisions. Her response to her dismissal involved forcefully striking the stumps with her bat. Subsequently, she criticized the umpiring as “pathetic” during the post-match presentation. Notably, at the end-of-series photographs, Kaur’s remark, “bring the umpires too,” implied their association with the Bangladesh team.
Harmanpreet Kaur to miss the first two matches of the Asian Games
The ramifications of Harmanpreet Kaur’s actions translated into three demerit points for “showing dissent at an umpiring decision” and an additional point for “public criticism” of match officials. In addition, fines totalling 50% and 25% of her match fee were levied for the two infractions. The accumulation of four or more demerit points within a 24-month period prompts a conversion to suspension points, thereby invoking a ban.
Amidst the aftermath of the ban, Kaur’s steadfast stance and commitment to fair play have garnered attention. Harmanpreet Kaur’s ban will preclude her participation in the initial two matches of India’s journey in the Asian Games T20 competition, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou from September to October.
