England vs West Indies 5th T20I: England to Carry on the Momentum Whereas West Indies Look for the Consolation Win

Away from summer’s wispy clouds, dancing daffodils, typical incessant rain, the season of fall has begun in England. The season was to begin in June but after a lot of uncertainty with India and South Africa cancelling their tours, West Indies had agreed to a part of this five-match T20I series.

Even though the scoreline looks 4-0 both teams had been eagerly waiting for this series after the long tedious break due to this Covid-19 pandemic. This is the final match of the summer. England would like to end it with a 5-0 victory whereas West Indies would want to get a consolation win.

For England, the top order has not been performing well to get England off to a flyer. Beaumont got a big score in the very first match but in the next few games, she only registered starts. It has been a tough time for Danielle Wyatt. She has looked horribly out of nick in these games. Wyatt would like to finish the series on a good note. The opening partnership, baring the first match, did not live up to the expectations.

They added 43, 34, 12 and 12 in the four matches they have played. The middle-order has seen someone or the other stepping up for the team – Nat Sciver with her 81 in the third T20I, Jones and Knight in the fourth game. Sciver has not looked in good touch the entire series saving the third match. Amy Jones who has been demoted down the order has shown prominence n the middle order. She has scored 108 runs with a strike rate of 140.

Captain Heather Knight played some quick swift innings; she will be eager to carry on from her last match. Amy Jones has gained a lot of former playing in the middle order – she can play with a lot more freedom and style. One can expect quick middle-order runs from her. Anya Shrubsole has had a disappointing series so far for a player of her calibre.

Her new ball partner, Katherine Brunt has had a good series with the ball and has also contributed some useful middle-order runs. Sarah Glenn has been a huge plus point for England in the spin department. Together with Sophie Ecclestone, Glenn has formed a formidable partnership. Both spinners are young and they have bright
future ahead of them.

The West Indies team need a win badly after what has been a disappointing tour for them. They have been outperformed, especially in the batting department. With the exception of Deandra Dottin who has scored 174 runs with two half-centuries, the other star players in the likes of Taylor, Matthews, Campbell have barely contributed with the bat.

The new addition to the squad, Lee Ann Kirby has not been helpful to the team. The key batters, Taylor and Matthews have picked up wickets with their part-time bowling. The experience of Anisa Mohammed in the spin department hurt the West Indies as Afy Fletcher did not match up to the requirements of the game. The experienced Shakera Selman was left out after she consistently failed to perform.

West Indies changed their teams a number of times. Shamilia Connell and Aaliyah Alleyne will look to retain their positions in the team. All is not lost for the West Indies. They still have a game to prove themselves and prevent a 5-0 win. But for England, it seems they will maintain their consistency and winning habit. After this game, it is a question when these two teams will play again.
