ENG vs IND: Team India To Aim For A Clean Sweep Against England

ENG vs IND: India will aim for a 3-0 ODI series win when they face England in the third ODI at Lord’s on September 24. India has taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. While India would eye a rare 3-0 win on English soil, England would target a consolation win to salvage some pride in the series. Also, a win for India would be the perfect send-off to Jhulan Goswami who would be playing the last ODI of her career at Lord’s.

India’s batting has been top-class

Indian batswomen have been in great form throughout the series. Smriti Mandhana helped chased down a target of 228 with a brilliant knock of 91 in the first ODI. In the second match, captain Harmanpreet Kaur laid the foundation of a big win with a knock of 143* off 111 balls. India won the second match by 88 runs to completely outplay their opponent. Other players such as Harleen Deol and Yastika Bhatia have also been among the runs, with a fifty each. India would expect a few runs from their opener, Shafali Verma, as well in the last game.
Indian bowlers have also responded well to the challenge, backing up their batswomen with accurate bowling, complemented by some sharp fielding. Jhulan impressed in the first ODI with 1/23. Renuka Singh did well in the second ODI, taking 4/57.

However, India should not take the third ODI lightly, with the series already won. A 3-0 series win would give a further boost to the confidence, and give India an edge over England in future matches. England would definitely come hard at India who must be ruthless to seal a rare clean sweep overseas. For the record, this is India’s first ODI series win in England since 1999.

Players to watch out for

Indian top-order has been in great form, with Mandhana and Kaur leading the scoring chart with their strong batting displays in the two ODIs. The two will again be the key for India to complete a sweep. Also, all eyes will be on Goswami who could produce some magic or two with the ball to sign off her career on a high.

England was blown away

England has lost its invincible tag at home. First, they lost in the Commonwealth Games, bowing out to India in the semis, but bounced back to win the T20I series against India that favoured teams chasing in good batting conditions. However, in the ODI series, India has been the dominant force, making England pay dearly for their poor execution of plans.

England has had few worries that they would have to quickly address. The lack of consistent runs from the top order has been a concern. The opening slot has been rotated between Tammy Beaumont, Emma Lamb, and Sophia Dunkley. They need to select their best two openers and give them a longer run for stability.

Second, England bowlers have caved in under pressure. Kaur and Deepti Sharma plundered 71 runs in the last 4 overs in the second ODI as England bowlers lost their line and length under some brilliant attacking strokeplay. England must come up with plans to stop Mandhana and Kaur, the two pillars of Indian batting, from running away with the third match as well. Lastly, England’s fielding has been below standards. It has lost its spite in the face of some attacking batting. Unless England is able to find solutions to the problems quickly, they would even struggle to give a scare to a dominant India in the third ODI.

Players to watch out for

Danni Wyatt has been in good nick in the two ODIs and has scored runs with wickets falling around her. Once again, Wyatt has to summon her top batting skills to thwart India. Wyatt could be promoted up the order to counter the threat of sharp Indian bowling. It would be interesting to see how Wyatt fares up against Indian bowlers in the third ODI.

ENG vs IND: Head to head

This is the first ODI series win for India in England since 1999. Overall, India has won 33, lost 40, and 2 no results in 75 ODIs against England. In the last 5 ODIs between the two teams, India has won 3 and lost 2 against England.

Pitch report of the third ODI at Lord’s

The pitch at Lord’s is a high-scoring ground, with 10 scores of 300 and more recorded here in ODIs. The lowest score on this ground has been 249. Hence, it is a batting beauty, with an excellent outfield, making run-making easy. Hence, choosing to bat first and piling up a big score would be the agenda of the team after winning the toss.
