ENG vs IND: Smriti Mandhana, Yastika, Harmanpreet Shine As India Secure The 1st ODI

ENG vs IND: Smriti Mandhana has played an impressive game to help India secure the very first ODI game against England. Her smashing knock of 91 helped the team chase the runs against the young English side. A fantastic game it has been for the Indians, with Harmanpreet Kaur and Yastika Bhatia, both accompanying Mandhana with phenomenal half centuries each. It surely hasn’t been a memorable ride for the English squad. They failed to defend their runs and lost the game by a huge margin.

The game at Hove was indeed a game of hope for the Indians to make a comeback after losing two matches T20 games against England. The English squad were expected to continue with their winning streak. India won the toss and elected to chase the scores. The game began with Emma Lamb and Tammy Beaumont opening the bat for the English squad. While the two lasted a few deliveries, they weren’t able to contribute much. Emma Lamb went back at 12, while Tammy Beaumont left in the very next over. Beaumont fell prey to Goswami’s classic ball before leg and Emma Lamb fell a victim to Meghana Singh’s delivery.

Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey continued with the team’s batting order but the team wasn’t able to gain momentum and stability until Danni Wyatt entered. She scored a fabulous 43 runs for the team in 50 deliveries. She was unfortunately bowled on Deepti Sharma’s delivery and her streak was continued by Alice Davidson Richards. Alice has been a piece of an eye for the English squad.

She scored 50 runs at a strike rate of 81. Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone came in to bat for a few quick runs and the team settled for a total of 227 runs in 50 overs. The Indian bowlers took collaborative efforts and each player contributed well. Each player took a wicket each, with Deepti Sharma taking two wickets. All bowled at an impressive economy. Another example of how bowlers won the game for a side. The Indian batters came in with a calm attitude with less than 230 runs to chase. The pressure was considerably less and this indeed showed with their stance and body language on the field today.

Smriti Mandhana opened with Verma for India while chasing in the ENG vs IND match. Shafali Verma went back way too early securing just 1 run. Smriti Mandhana shouldered the responsibility of leading the team through the required runs. She scored a total of 91 runs in 99 deliveries, contributing the major runs for the side. She was backed by Yastika Bhatia who too played amazingly well, securing 50 runs in 47 deliveries. Mandhana gave the team the required stance while Yastika brought in the required momentum.

With Yastika’s unfortunate wicket on Dean’s delivery, Harmanpreet Kaur came in and continued with the momentum. She secured 74 runs in 94 deliveries alongside Mandhana and then Harleen Deol. A captain’s share for various reasons. The best part about India’s batting was that they were able to keep up with the momentum right to the end of the game. They carried it from Mandhana to Bhatia to Kaur. This helped them secure the runs in less than 45 overs.

India secured 232 runs in 44.2 overs with 7 wickets to spare. Amidst all the chaos, Kate Cross was able to secure two wickets and Charlie Dean secured one. A not so impressive game from the English side. They will now expect to return stronger in the coming games.

ENG vs IND Brief Scores:

England 227/7 (Alice Davidson Richards 50(61), Danni Wyatt 43 (50), Deepti Sharma 2/33) won against India 232/3 (Smriti Mandhana 91 (99), Harmanpreet Kaur 74(94), Kate Cross 2/43) by 7 wickets.
