ENG vs IND: After being beaten in the first T20I by 9 wickets, India will have to bounce back strongly to level the series against England in the second T20I at Derby on September 13. India is known to come up strongly after a poor start, and hence, the second T20I could see India giving a tough fight to England at the latter’s den.
India need to brush off the first T20I loss:
Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur blamed wet conditions at Chester-le-Street for the loss in the first T20I as her players misfielded, overran, dropped catches, and even had a player injured in Radha Yadav, resulting in a bowler short.But she hailed the spirit of her players for putting the efforts in damp conditions. However, come Tuesday, Harmanpreet and her players would have to leave the past behind, and bring their ace game to the table to level the series 1-1, making the third match a virtual final. India will bank heavily on their captain Harmanpreet to anchor the innings in the tough English batting conditions.
Deepti Sharma who played a cameo of 24-ball 29 not out in the first T20I will also be crucial to India’s chances. India might promote her up the order to do more damage to the opponents. Also, Radha, who got injured in the first T20I thanks to the wet conditions, could be a doubtful starter for the second match.
But, India will have to improve vastly in terms of their ground fielding in the tough English conditions. Otherwise, India may kiss the chances of levelling the series goodbye. For the record, India missed dismissing Sophia Dunkley three times during the defence in the first T20I, resulting in the England opener anchoring the chase successfully with an unbeaten 61.
Players to watch out for
Harmanpreet Kaur is the best player of India in the squad, and the whole batting revolves around her. If India has to do well in the second T20I, the captain must come good with the bat. Besides, the captain has to lift the team’s morale after the loss in the first T20I where Team India struggled with the ground fielding. By leading from the front in both batting and fielding, Harmanpreet can inspire her teammates to do well in the second match.

England was not convincing either:
It’s not that England demolished India in the first T20I, winning the toss was key for them as India batted in wet conditions, and found run-scoring difficult compared to the second innings when it was easier to bat. Also, England was helped by the poor ground fielding by India, who let go of chances that should have been taken. England should not forget that just recently, India had beaten them in a thriller by 4 runs in the 2022 Commonwealth Games semi-finals.
England is battling their own set of problems with some key players such as Nat Sciver and Katherine Brunt missing for various reasons. Their regular skipper Heather Knight is herself out with an injury. In the first T20I, India was going strong batting at 47/1 in 7 overs before England’s leg-spinner Sarah Glenn came to the party with 4/23. Hence, Glenn will once again be the key for England to give her team the edge in the second T20I. England would also hope their opener Dunkley who scored 61 not out in the first match continues with the good form and give her team a good start.
England, however, has to be wary of overconfidence post the win in the first match as conditions favoured them. In better-balanced conditions, England would find India a competitive opponent to get away with. Amy Jones, who is captaining the side in the absence of acting skipper Nat Sciver, has a tough job at hand to deliver the goods for the second time in a row, despite playing at home.

Glenn was the wrecker-in-chief in the first match where she took 4 wickets. For some reason, India continues to struggle against quality spin bowling although they have quality slow bowlers in their ranks and pitches tailormade for slow bowling at home. Nevertheless, all credit to Glenn for bowling superbly in the first match. She will once again be the key for England in the second T20I. India could play out Glenn’s overs and attack other bowlers.
Head to head: The last time India played a T20I series in England, they lost 2-1. In the last five T20Is between the two teams, India has won 2 and lost 3. Overall, India has a poor record against England, winning 6 and losing 18 in 24 T20Is.
