BCCI To Reveal Names Of Five Franchises For Inaugural Women’s IPL on January 25

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is knocking on the doors. After the event, cricket fans will witness the first edition of the Women’s IPL. The interest is quite high amongst the fans as they have been hoping for a proper IPL-style tournament for the women. They will finally get to see the likes of Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Deepti Sharma among others, take part in the inaugural Women’s IPL.

 

Five franchises will be seen in action in the tournament that is slated to take place in March. Cricket fans have been waiting eagerly to find out which five teams will be participating in the tournament. They will not have to wait much longer. As per a report from ESPNCricinfo on Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to reveal the names of the five teams on January 25, Wednesday.

In its tender notice, BCCI stated that in the auction, money will not necessarily be the deciding factor. They will be looking for groups that want to strive toward the betterment of women’s cricket in the country.

BCCI recently postponed the media rights auction that was slated to happen on January 12. It will now be held on January 16.

The format of the WIPL

In the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document, BCCI clearly pointed out that a single bidder can contest for more than one city. As per the information on the ITT document, the first three seasons will consist of 22 matches.

Each team will play the other teams twice in the league phase. After the conclusion of the 20 group-stage matches, the team with the most points will head to the final. The two teams that finish 2nd and 3rd will play in an eliminator to determine the other finalist.

8 IPL franchises are in the race to own teams at the WIPL.
