Baroda Coach Atul Bedade Suspended Until Further Enquiry

Former India player and current head coach of the Baroda women’s team Atul Bedade has been suspended due to sexual harassment and public shaming by the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA).

The incident came in the limelight when a couple of senior players and their family members complained against Bedade for his alleged misbehaviour during the recently-concluded Senior One Day tournament in Una, Himachal Pradesh in February. After that, the association took the decision of his suspension.

“One of the senior team players had a nervous breakdown during the tournament and she had to be flown back home. Last week, we heard another parent complaining against (the head coach) for public shaming,” BCA secretary Ajit Lele said to Sportstar.

However, the BCA has started an internal inquiry on the basis of the complaint where a four-member panel has been formed. That includes the senior HR manager of the BCA (Priyanka Verma), CEO (Shishir Hattangadi) and two secretaries (Lele and Parag Patel) and they decided his suspension with immediate effect.

“We will form a neutral committee, which will look into the matter and based on its findings, a final decision will be taken,” Lele said.

In a letter which was issued on Saturday,  the BCA shared that Bedade was suspended under the policy of sexual harassment and public shaming.

“personal comments on physicality to personal menstruation; comments that discourage the morals of the team members; angry outbursts unbecoming of a women’s team coach and using unparliamentary language that is not accepted of a person-in-charge; behaviour oblivious of gender sensitivity,” the letter added.

However, Atul Bedade said that he was surprised to receive the notice and not in a position to comment on anything as well. Notably, he is in Hyderabad for his treatment of nervous breakdown. The former player, Atul Bedade had played 13 ODIs and was earlier associated with the Baroda men’s team of. He became the head coach of the women’s team last year only.
