Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka Win Over Bangladesh, India Defeat Thailand To Secure The First Position

Asia Cup 2022: As each team hustles to maintain their positions on the points table, the competition has taken an intense turn. The two games played today were of immense importance for all four sides in order to stay active in their race for the title. The first game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh witnessed a tough Sri Lankan side that demolished Bangladesh.

A power display with the ball in hand, defeating Bangladesh after the DLS method was applied. They won by 3 runs escalating to the third position on the points table. India on the other hand, overshadowed their opponents, Thailand and destructed them in the first inning itself, further winning the game comfortably by 9 wickets in all. They have successfully escalated to the first position on the points table.

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh

The game started with high hopes from Bangladesh, although they haven’t been able to impress lately. In order for them to survive in the tussle for the cup, Bangladesh needed to secure a win over Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh won the toss and took a smart decision by picking to bowl first. The Sri Lankan openers HarshithaSamarawickrama and ChamariAthapatthu came in to bat. Athapaththu lost her wicket way too early to JaharanaAlam and Harshitha was accompanied by Anushka Sanjeevani. The Sri Lankan batting side was able to perform well, partially due to the bowling attack and partially due to the weather conditions.

The weather didn’t seem to be in the favour of the game and Sri Lanka was compelled to play an 18-over game. Nilakshi De Silva proved to be the highest run scorer with 28 runs contribution. The Sri Lankan side had to wrap at a total of 83 runs with 5 more wickets to spare.
Some commendable bowling efforts from Rumana Ahmed who bagged 2 wickets in the form of Anushka Sanjeeva and Kavisha Dilhari.

As it rained on these two teams’ parades in the most literal sense, the Bangladesh team was given a target of 41 to be chased in 7 overs according to the DLS method. With a strong bowling attack from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh failed to secure the required runs in 7 overs. Inoka Ranaweera shined, as she secured a total of 4 wickets leading her team to a win against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka’s commendable win indeed with small targets to defeat in uncertain weather conditions. Bangladesh lost by a thin line of 3 runs. Ranaweera was pronounced the Player of the Match.

Sri Lanka 83/5 (Nilakshi De Silva 28 (31), Rumana Ahmed 2/14) won against Bangladesh 37/7 (Nigar Sultana 12 (11), Inoka Ranaweera 4/7) by 3 runs. (DLS method)

India vs Thailand

A game of glory for India, restricting Thailand to a low score and then winning the game comfortably to top the points table. Nothing went right for Thailand who struggled to make a comeback in the game. India left no loose ends, winning the game by 9 wickets and 84 deliveries to spare.

India won the toss and decided to bowl first. Except for Thailand’s openers NannapatKoncharoenkai and NatthakanChantam, no batter was able to impress. All thanks to the Indian bowlers, Deepti Sharma, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Meghna Singh who played brilliantly well, picking wickets and restricting the opponents to a low score at the same time.

Sneh Rana shined especially with her 3 wickets spell, bowling at an economy of just 2.25. What a spell from Rana, helping India restrict Thailand to merely 37 runs in 15.1 overs. Thailand’s batters were swept away in just 15 overs.

A comfortable game for India, having to chase a total of 38 runs in 20 overs. Sabbineni Meghana and Pooja Vastrakar finished the game for India chasing down the required score in just 6 overs. India lost a wicket in the form of Shafali Verma, bagged by Nattaya Boochatham. India secured 40 runs and won the game by 9 wickets. Sneh Rana was named the Player of the Match.

Thailand 37/10 (Sneh Rana 3/9, Deepti Sharma 2/10) lost against India 40/1 (Sabbineni Meghana 20 (18), Nattaya Boochatham 1/15) by 9 wickets.
