On Wednesday, July 12, England and Australia will play the first of three one-day international (ODI) matches in the Ashes 2023. The fixture will take place at Bristol’s County Ground. England clinched the three-match series against arch-rivals Australia with a comprehensive victory in the last T20I of the Women’s Ashes 2023 at the legendary Lord’s.
The action has now shifted to the 50-over format, with the hosts having wiped out the Aussies in the three-match series to recapture the Ashes. Given that it is incumbent on Heather Knight’s side going into the ODI series, Australia will be seeking to rebound from a rare series defeat. It was their first series setback in almost five years, with their previous defeat being in the 2017-18 Ashes against the same opposition. The action between the bitter adversaries returns on July 12 in Briston.
The hosts will try to redeem themselves in the 50-over format, wherein they are world champions. Beth Mooney was the most prolific run-scorer in the T20I series, and her performance in the ODIs will be crucial. Left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen also pitched superbly for Australia, but her efforts went unrewarded.
England, on the contrary, will be eager to pick up where they left off in the quickest manner possible. Danni Wyatt and Sophie Ecclestone proved to be particularly impressive for them.

Ashes 2023: England vs Australia, 1st ODI – Pitch Report, Weather Forecast
Over the years, the Bristol surface has generally benefitted batters. Although there is some early zip for new ball bowlers, the turf remains intact throughout the game, and the team that wins the toss is more likely to bowl first at this venue.
There is a 40 to 50% probability of rain throughout the match, which could cause delays and stoppage. Temperatures will hover around 18 degrees Celsius.
Ashes 2023: England vs Australia, 1st ODI – Key Players
England
Danni Wyatt: Danni Wyatt was named player of the T20I series after hitting 109 runs in three matches. It would be fascinating to see if she can carry this form into the ODI format since she has only scored 171 runs in 15 innings against Australia (avg. 11.40).
Sophie Ecclestone: Sophie Ecclestone never ceases to surprise, and she can be the torchbearer for the English bowling attack in the ODI series too. She got five wickets in the T20I series and has 12 wickets in her last nine ODIs at an economy rate of 3.91.
Australia
Alyssa Healy: Alyssa Healy hit a remarkable 170 against England in her last ODI. In total, she has struck out 658 runs in 20 innings for an average of 36.55 and a strike rate of 95.77. If Healy survives the powerplay, she has the potential to go big. In one-day internationals, Australia’s captain has an excellent record against Sophie Ecclestone: 103 balls, 83 runs, and one dismissal.
Annabel Sutherland: Annabel Sutherland has grown to years of age. She scored a century in the Test, gave up only seven runs per over with three wickets in the T20Is, and took superb catches in key fielding positions. One to keep an eye on.
