Days after Katey Martin’s call, Amy Satterthwaite too has made a decision to call it time on International cricket after having a stupendous career. The player seems to have taken a stand after the New Zealand Cricket Board denied their vice-captain’s novel playing contract.
Satterthwaite bids to adieu to international cricket becoming one of New Zealand’s finest batters of all times. She holds a joint record with Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara for scoring the most consecutive centuries. Satterthwaite has played the highest number of ODI games played by any New Zealand female Cricketer (145) and has scored the second-highest runs for her side with a total of 4639.
Satterthwaite has respectfully accepted the decision made by the board and said, “It has been a tough few days after learning of NZC’s decision to head in a new direction and contract some younger cricketers. I am disappointed not to be receiving a contract and believe I still had more to offer, however I respect NZC’s decision and I wish the White Ferns all the best as they embark on an exciting winter of cricket, including the Commonwealth Games. I’ll be supporting them all the way.”
Amy Satterthwaite set an impressive play at the World Cup this year, bowling an impressive spell of 3/25 against Bangladesh and scoring a total of 175 runs in the campaign. With her retirement, an entire era has come to an end.
“Amy has been a prominent name in women’s cricket for a very long time. She has been one of the best performers for her country during such a pivotal time for the growth of the women’s game, inspiring a new generation of fans and players,” said ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice, while he congratulated the player at her international farewell.
“On behalf of the ICC, I congratulate Amy for a successful career and hope she continues to stay involved in the game. I wish her all the best for the future,” he further added.
New Zealand Cricket General Manager of High Performance Bryan Stronach paid credit to Amy Satterthwaite calling her one of the most memorable performers of New Zealand. He said, “Amy will be remembered as one of our best cricketers; her record is outstanding, and she can feel really proud about what she has achieved – not just for herself and the team, but also for all the players she has inspired and enabled.
“Essentially, we’re looking to the future and want to give some younger cricketers a chance to develop their skills surrounded by our high performance systems. We also considered the immediate playing programme and next pinnacle events – both heavily weighted towards T20I cricket,” he again shared.
Although the player bids farewell to International cricket, she’ll continue her domestic career, playing for Canterbury Magicians in New Zealand and will be seen in action at Women’s Hundred with the Manchester Originals.
