ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup: Here Is All You Need To Know

The world is set for the inaugural season of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Sixteen teams will take part in this tournament which will be held in South Africa. The season comprises 41 matches and is set to begin on the 14th of January 2023 as well. The World Cup matches will be played in Benoni and Potchefstroom across four venues.

Teams are taking part in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup:

The teams have qualified for the event, depending on their international rankings. 11 teams thus gained direct entry, while the remaining 5 teams had to undergo qualifiers.
The eleven teams that received automatic entries are as follows: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. The remaining 5 teams, namely, UAE, Rwanda, USA, Scotland and Indonesia.

The 5 qualifying teams made it through the regional rounds. Nineteen teams participated in the regional round, that had begun in June. The teams were divided into 5 groups depending on their regions. Teams from Asia, Africa, Europe, East Asia Pacific and the Americas were accepted for these qualifiers.

From the Asian qualifiers, UAE made it to the U19 World Cup, defeating opponents like Bhutan, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, and Qatar. In the finals they defeated Thailand, winning the game by 6 wickets to secure a spot at the World Cup.

Rwanda qualified from the African group of Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda. Rwanda defeated Tanzania in the final game and secured its place. Scotland secured the series against the Netherlands to qualify from the European side. Indonesia and USA won their respective spots from EAP and American groups.

Format of the tournament

Sixteen qualified teams will be divided into 4 groups. These will first play the group level games, against each other and will then compete against each team’s finest at the quarter and the semi-finals.

The groups are as follows:

Group A: Australia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and USA

The first group consists of these four teams, that have played some spotlight games in the past. Australia is among the global favorite team, while Bangladesh consists of some dark horses, who have gained experience playing with the senior team.

The Sri Lankan team consists of a bunch of talented youngsters. Their skipper, Vishmi Gunaratne has fine experience playing with the senior team. The USA too seems like a tough squad that is being coached under Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Group B: England, Pakistan, Rwanda and Zimbabwe

England and Pakistan will be among the major squads of the group. The two teams consist of some of the world’s finest players. They are a talented bunch and are expected to make it through the Super 6 stage.

Zimbabwe is expected to perform well given some experienced players like Michelle Mavunga being a part of the squad. Rwanda on the other hand, performed exceptionally well at the qualifiers to make it to the World Cup tournament. They are expected to keep the same momentum at an international level.

Group C: Indonesia, Ireland, New Zealand and West Indies

Indonesia are the newbie and has made it to the World Cup stage for the first time ever. They are expected to perform well, keeping up with the momentum gained at the regional games. While Ireland consists of players like Amy Hunter, New Zealand are well known for their three prime players: Fran Jonas, Georgia Plimmer and Isabella Gaze.

Group D: India, Scotland, South Africa and the UAE

The Indian team seems intimidating with the inclusion of players like Shafali Verma. Their recent win over South Africa will have provided the required confidence. Scotland Cricket Team has made it to the World Cup for the first time ever. UAE, on the other hand, played impressively well and will now hope to change their chance into a victorious one by making it to the top three.

The top three teams will from each group make it to the Super 6 stage. Competing with each other the qualifying teams will gather for the semi-finals, which are scheduled to be held on the 27th of January. The finals will be held at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on the 29th of January.
