BCCI Invites Bids To Own And Operate Women’s IPL Teams

The Women’s IPL has the potential to change the landscape of women’s cricket. We are about to see some future stars of world cricket rise to the occasion. We have seen how Indian cricket has changed following the advent of the IPL back in 2008. Yes, India has not been able to win a T20 World Cup following the start of the cash-rich league but it has certainly given rise to some really exciting talents like Suryakumar Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sanju Samson, Umran Malik, and the list goes on.

The exposure that the league gave to young players, to rub shoulders with the best in world cricket, paid rich dividends and gave them a taste of international cricket whilst at the domestic level. The same can be expected when the women’s IPL gets underway this year. The dates have not been revealed as yet but there is a possibility of the inaugural edition taking place from March 3-26.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked for “reputed entities” to make a non-refundable payment of INR 5 lakh by January 21 to obtain the “invitation to tender”.

“The Governing Council of the IPL invites bids from reputed entities to acquire the right to own and operate a team in Women’s Indian Premier League, through a tender process,” the BCCI said in a statement.

The format of the inaugural Women’s IPL

The first edition of the Women’s IPL will be held in March and five teams will be seen in action.

The five teams will be playing each other twice as there will be 20 league games. The table toppers will get a direct entry into the final.

The second and third-place teams will have to play an Eliminator and the winner of that match will go on to play the final. While there are four overseas players allowed in the playing XI of the men’s IPL, the women’s IPL will see five overseas players in the playing XI.
